Grants Funded 2012-13

Grants Funded by BEF 2012-2013
“A Video View of the World of Art”- Kuppens
This grant enhances all students’ art experience by providing a projector that facilitates the display of videos and tutorials on art concepts and famous artists. Students can now be immersed in the world of art through this dynamic tool and experience art in a whole new way.
 “High Interest, Low Readability Library”-
This grant provides books that expand the current library offerings for the upper grades at BES. Older students will have more diverse and meaningful reading materials of their choice during Independent Reading Time.
“Morning Meeting/Let the Games Begin”- Fletcher, LaPierre, Pascoal
This grant replaces older materials in the kindergarten classes with newer materials such as: IPods, mats and games. These materials support the kindergarten philosophy of “The Responsive Classroom” which is a widely used, research and evidence-based approach to elementary education that increases academic achievement, decreases problem behaviors, improves social skills, and leads to more high-quality instruction. The students can accomplish this through greeting each other on their welcome mats, sharing news or educational objects, singing songs on the IPod and playing games with friends.
“It All Adds Up”- Andrews, DeLuca, DiFonso
This grant provides the fifth grade students with math graphing whiteboards and clipboards that are compatible with the Smart Boards. These materials will incorporate more real world connections into students’ learning of multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and critical thinking.  They will transform the way students view math and enable them to be active learners who create, construct and apply critical thinking to solve real world problems that arise in their lives.
“Opening the Doors to Web 2.0”- DeLuca
This grant funds laptop computers for the fifth grade classes. Because technology is a gateway to expanding the students’ experiences in the classroom, these laptops will be cross-curricular and span language arts, social studies and math. Exposure to Web 2.0 technologies helps to create life-long, active learners and offers our students an opportunity to play on a more level playing field with their peers.
“Learning With Leveled Literacy”- Special Education Department
This grant funds books that round out the current leveled literature offerings. They will be used to work with students at their individual reading levels and help advance their reading skills and abilities.
“Replenishing Resplendent Reading”- Benson, Belbin, Koziak
This grant is for the fourth grade class and replaces the older, soft cover trade books with new, hard cover ones. These books meet the guidelines of the school’s Core Curriculum and help students gain a broader understanding of different cultures, countries, and history through the associated enrichment activities that are incorporated into their units of study.
“The Show MUST Go On!”- Giguere, Kelleher, Sabourin
This grant funds a dramatic puppet theater for the first grade students. Engaging in pretend and dramatic readings benefits students because it allows them to experience various roles in life that involve social skills and emotional responses. This also leads to more success in academics as well. Implementing the use of puppets in play provides a child with the opportunity to gain stronger language skills through use of voice, use language to control their surroundings and organize their thoughts.
 “America the Beautiful”- Koziak
This grant funds the fourth grade with updated state books in the award winning “America the Beautiful” series. This series provides students with factual information about each state’s geography, history, people, economy and government. The students use these books throughout the year as a resource to learn fascinating information and to complete their end-of-year project “The Parade of States”.
“Colorful Carpets Captivate Learning”- Keane, Lubarsky, Marineau
This grant funds educational rugs for each of the second grade classrooms. These rugs are an important component in the primary grades in providing daily instruction and curriculum. The colorful rugs will help with classroom organization by utilizing brightly colored spaces for children to sit and work comfortably and possess an alphabet border that assists with letter formation and spelling via visual cues.
